Movies
Carmike Wynnsong 12
Great little 12 screen theater on Hanes Mall, near Walmart, that shows new movies.
The Grand Theatre 18
Giant 18 screen theater with super nice seats and large screens, located off University. Shows new movies and including some in Imax/3D.
Marketplace Cinemas
Small theater on Peter's Creek, this little spot shows slightly older (pre-DVD release) films for only $2.50 per ticket. Be sure to bring cash!
Restaurants
Bib's
An East-meets-West BBQ joint in downtown. Check their events calendar for deals like 1/2 off kid's meals or Wings Wednesday.
Perfect for a quick burger and shake stop on the cheap--their milkshakes are adored on Yelp, and we can personally vouch for their yummy burgers & fries.
Firehouse Subs
Yummy sub sandwiches--and kids eat free Wednesday nights and ALL DAY Saturday!

Grecian Corner
A tiny Greek restaurant that's been around since 1970. It is walking distance from the hospital, perfect for a lunch date if you can haul your honey away from the books.
The Loop Pizza Grill
A fast casual environment with great pizzas, burgers, salads, and milkshakes. Perfect for a tasty but low-key meal out.
Mellow Mushroom
A Winston favorite for pizza and Italian food, it has a fun, casual atmosphere and out-of-the-ordinary pizza options.
O'So
With a modern atmosphere and menu options ranging from Greek to Italian and beyond, it has something for everyone.
Thai Sawatdee
Yummy Thai food (and a lot of it for your money) with two locations--one of them in the Harris Teeter grocery store on Cloverdale (hence the nickname "Teeter Thai"). It may be a weird location but it is surprisingly good food, and it an easy walk from the med school, so great for a quick lunch.
The Old 4th Street Filling Station
Great for date night (or a group outing!), head downtown and dine outside under trees strung with twinkle lights or indoors if its too cold out. There's something for everyone on their menu.
Hiking
There are tons of great hiking & camping spots within driving distance of Winston, and the view changes with every season (don't forget to make a trip when the leaves are changing!). Here are a few of our favorite hiking locales:
Pilot Mountain
Hanging Rock
Parks
One of the great things about living here is the plethora of parks! We've explored them for playgroups with kids or walks with our pups--this list covers our favorites, but there are tons more you can explore here.
Miller Park
Tanglewood Park
Washington Park (great off-leash dog park with a bike trail!)
Groceries
Aldi might make a strange first impression (you have to deposit a quarter to use a shopping cart and you have to bring your own grocery bags) but they have killer deals on food. We especially love watching out for their produce sales (where you can stock up on things like strawberries for $.99/lb or a big bag of Del Monte bananas for $.44).
An upscale grocery store but with decent prices, double couponing, good sales, and a 5% discount with student ID. Their food is almost all high quality. Be sure to join their e-VIC club for more discounts & deals.
Walmart
Super Walmart on Hanes Mall has a full grocery store inside. It is relatively cheap (except for cereal!) but the food quality is not as good as some of the other local grocery stores, especially the produce.
The Farmers Market
Greensboro has a huge farmer's market--a great place to find fresh, local produce.
Ollie's
A big overstock store off of Country Club with a great selection of books, cookware, housewares, etc. at deeply discounted prices. Check out their weekly flyers for their newest inventory.
MegaThrift
A department-store sized thrift store. It takes a little searching to find good clothes for you, but their kids section is great and something is on sale every day, with special 50% entire stock or $.99 for any item in a particular section. (Great place to buy winter gear for cheap if you're new to the snow!)
Gently used, good quality children's clothes and other goods like strollers, toys, bouncers, etc.
Plato's Closet
Name brand second-hand clothes that are in nice shape.
Seasonal Events & Activities
Some things are so good they only happen once a year. ;)
Fall
Dixie Classic Fair
A new theme every year, and plenty of fun & fair food!
Winter
Tanglewood Lights
A wonderful drive-through Christmas light display at Tangelwood park. Cost is $10-15 per car (depending on the day). We recommend going early in the season so it will be less crowded, and bring something to do in the car--the waiting line can get long (but we think it is worth it!).
Spring
Greek Festival
Greek food, fun, and lots of people watching!
U-Pick Strawberries
Clodbuster Farms has delicious strawberries that you can pick yourself. We like to take the kids and have a picnic on by the rows of berries when we're done. :)
Summer
Reynolda House Cinema Under the Stars
Reynolda House shows outdoor movies on select evenings in August. Check their calendar for "Cinema Under the Stars."
